Gable’s Fables 8: The “Notting Hill Bomb Plot” that Never Was

In 1981, Searchlight claimed to have uncovered a “neo-Nazi” plot to bomb the Notting Hill Carnival. This story appeared in three different places:

- the Daily Mirror, was repeated with major inconsistencies in Searchlight, and in a book and a TV documentary, both called The Other Face of Terror.

The Searchlight story suggested that Special Branch officers had "discovered that the neo-Nazis plotted to set off a suitcase bomb", (Daily Mirror July 21, 1981). Searchlight enhanced the story claiming that the plot was "intended to leave hundreds dead", (Searchlight No 74 August 1981, p2).

Unfortunately for Gable, inquiries with the press officer at New Scotland Yard revealed that the police had no knowledge of any such bomb plot. Furthermore, no-one was ever arrested or charged with any offence – the whole thing was a figment of Gable’s imagination.

This did not, however, stop the media from believing every word put out by Gable and Searchlight, although when it became clear that the story was a load of bollocks, they quickly dropped it.
