Gable’s Fables 6: Searchlight Apologizes for “Not Checking Its Facts”

Gable and Searchlight often print names, home addresses, work place details and other information designed to bring trouble to anyone they don’t like – they have been condemned for this by a judge on at least one occasion.

Under a heading "Whoops, sorry" in Ray Hill's column in the March 1993 edition of Searchlight, it was explained how Searchlight had printed information about one Barry Osbourne who worked as a housing officer for the London Borough of Newham. Barry Osbourne was a BNP candidate in the 1992 local elections in East London. Unfortunately the Mr. Osbourne at Newham council was a different person.

Searchlight apologised "unreservedly" to the council and Mr. Osbourne, saying “we were stupid not to check the facts.”

Indeed.

In another case, an apolitical friend of NF activist Phil Andrews in Middlesex, was named as being Derek Holland of National Front fame. Searchlight ran a story about the "NF chief", of the same name, living in " West London ", again, without checking the truth of the story. Again, they had to apologise.
